Secretariat, Convention on Biological Diversity

The CBD entered into force on 29 December 1993. It has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity; the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The principal functions of the CBD Secretariat are to prepare for, and service, meetings of the Conferences of the Parties (COP) and other subsidiary bodies of the Convention, and to coordinate with relevant international bodies. It is a neutral organization staffed by international civil servants, the Secretariat is accountable to the COP and its subsidiary bodies and carries out those tasks that fall under its associated mandate. The Secretariat is institutionally linked to UN Environment, its host institution and is located in Montreal, Canada since 1996.

The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership

The Biodiversity Indicators Partnership (BIP) is a global initiative to promote the development and delivery of biodiversity indicators. Its primary role is to serve the global user community by responding to the indicator requests of the CBD and other biodiversity-related Conventions, for IPBES, for reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals, and for use by national and regional governments. The BIP is a partnership of over 70 partners, including indicator producers, supporters, and users. The BIP is mandated to deliver information to the CBD through decisions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) and recommendations from its subsidiary bodies.
